1959 saw Mercedes-Benz replace its curvaceous 'Ponton' saloon with the W111 220, dubbed 'Fintail' by enthusiasts. The Ponton remained in production alongside the new W111 until November 1961, giving prospective customers the choice of body styles for a brief period. The new car kept the Ponton's basic mechanical package, but a more modern body drew cautious inspiration from the United States' obsession with tail fins, and debuted state-of-the-art safety technology including crumple zones and retractable seat belts. The expanded range also included a two-door coupé and convertible, with the backbone of the range remaining the 220 SE, powered by the stoic M127 2195cc inline-six. An entry-level four cylinder 200 was added, and the range was topped by the W112-coded 300 SE, boasting the exotic M189 2996cc six borrowed from the 300 SL and self-levelling pneumatic suspension. The final W111 was built in 1971.

This 1960 220 SE is presented in attractive grey over tan leather, in left-hand drive specification with a column-shift gear change. The car will require a full restoration, but is crucially complete, including the original Becker radio and speaker unit. The chrome brightwork is complete, and the interior shows heavy signs of age and will require restoration. The car starts but requires extensive recommissioning. A document file includes old French and Belgian registration documents, the original service book, and an original Mercedes-Benz service pouch. Belgian registration has been requested.
