Riding high from the company-saving success of the Neue Klasse saloon, BMW used the 1966 Geneva Motor Show to debut the 1600-2. This smaller, more affordable two-door would become one of the 1960's standout cars, quickly gaining a reputation for being light and agile, and with excellent performance and roadholding.

Stuttgart's Karosserie Baur were engaged to engineer a convertible version, and in September 1967 these were put into limited production, with Baur hand converting just 1,682 of the now named 1602 over a five-year period. The updated 2002 arrived in 1971, and Baur revised its design to include a roll hoop and fixed window frames. Baur employed this design on its E21 and E30 3 Series conversions that would follow, making these rare early 1602s the only full-convertible BMWs until the in-house E30 Convertible arrived in 1985.
Having been finished by Baur in 1969, this 1602 Cabriolet is a complete car that will serve as a basis for a full restoration. Paperwork accompanying the car includes an old New York State title, a French customs document, a photocopy of a cancelled French registration document, and a 2017 French FFVE Certificate for obtaining classic registration.
