The humble Sunbeam Alpine was ideally suited to England's narrow country lanes, but its four-cylinder motor lacked the power to compete with America's best. Rootes Group's West Coast sales manager, Ian Garrad, saw how Carroll Shelby had created the Cobra and engaged him to do the same with the Alpine. Shelby shoehorned Ford's new 260ci V8 into the Alpine's tight engine bay, creating the Tiger, which boasted more than twice the power with just a 20 percent weight penalty. Shelby pitched to build the Tiger at his California facility, but Rootes instead chose Jensen in West Bromwich, England, with Shelby earning a royalty on every car built. The Tiger was fast and quickly found success on the drag strip and in SCCA racing. Just over 6,000 Mk1s were built from 1964, with the Mk2 arriving in 1967, featuring Ford's enlarged 289ci V8, an oil cooler, and a stronger driveline. It is believed only 533 Mk2s were built that year before the project was cancelled upon Chrysler's acquisition of the Rootes Group.
This Tiger Mk2 presents in a classic red over black combination and is fitted with a black hardtop. The car sits on period correct minilite-style wheels. The identity of the car has been confirmed by the Sunbeam Tiger Owner's Association, and a Certificate of Authenticity is included. The car was bought by the current owner in 2016 from the UK, intended to do a rally in Malaysia, which the car finished with success. Presented in excellent drivers' condition, the car has been mechanically short after the current owner's purchase for the above challenging rally. The Tiger starts instantly and is very responsive on the throttle with a beautiful V8 sound from the 260ci Ford engine - as used in the early AC Cobras. The owner tackled the mechanical side of the car 100% it seems, with a clean and sound chassis, spending further on the interior, but leaving the body pretty untouched and 'dans son jus'. The Tiger benefits from an April 2022 Belgian technical inspection which is valid until August 2026, and the document folder includes some invoices for work carried out, the current owner's purchase invoice, a current Belgian registration certificate, an old UK V5, and a US title document from the state of Arkansas. The Tiger is on the button and ready to be used.
