De Tomaso's first true supercar was the Mangusta, a spectacularly styled design statement capable of over 250 km/h. Launched in 1967, just one year after Lamborghini's Muira and created right down the road, the Mangusta helped to spearhead the popularisation of the supercar. With American power from Ford in the form of their 289ci (and later 302ci) V8 wrapped in svelte lines penned by Ghia's Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Modena-built Mangusta is the epitome of late 1960s supercar design. Vast haunches, a tail peppered with slots and vents, and that unique two-part rear engine cover that hinges from the middle create a sense of purity and drama that is unmatched. The Mangusta was succeeded in 1970 by the Pantera, the car that would bring De Tomaso over two decades of success.

This European specification, quad headlamp Mangusta was delivered new to Italy on New Year's Eve 1970 and has been in our vendor's Barcelona collection for the past decade. Originally ivory in colour, the Mangusta was repainted in Ferrari Rosso Corsa during an extensive and professional restoration that also included several modifications aimed at increasing performance and safety. An upgraded Ford Hi-Po V8 engine is now fed by a quartet of Weber carburettors, with a free-breathing custom exhaust barely silencing the music. Staggered Campagnolo centre-lock wheels set the aggressive stance, there is a modern Brembo braking system, an aluminium fuel tank, adjustable suspension, fire suppression system, and air-conditioning. This exciting and tastefully modified Mangusta brings out the motorsport-inspired potential of this 1960s supercar. The car comes with cancelled Spanish registration documents.
