SL is one of the most famous designations in motoring, and the 1988 launch of the R129 generation pushed the storied nameplate firmly into the future. Gone was the chrome and glitz of the outdated R107, replaced by the smooth simplicity of Bruno Sacco's 'Vertical Affinity' styling ethos, creating a design he today regards as the most perfect of his career. ahead of its time. Based on the new W124 platform and assembled in Bremen, the R129 was built to a standard rarely seen and boasted rafts of groundbreaking safety features. And with extensive specialist support available today, the R129 is an eminently usable modern classic that espouses the best virtues of the SL badge. Diana, Princess of Wales, was famously so besotted that she contraversionaly replaced her Jaguar XJS with one. Over 200,000 were built in a 13-year production run from 1988.
This 1995 SL 280 was delivered new to the Netherlands, optioned in Azurite Blau over blue leather, and shows just under 35,000km on its odometer, documented by its original service book. Being a late 1995 car, this example benefits from the 1996 model year updates, which include a Bose stereo, body-coloured bumpers and trims, and side airbags. The venerable M104 2.8-litre 24-valve inline six fitted to the SL 280 is renowned for its lightness and reliability, with a smooth and wafting nature in keeping with the SL's touring character. This SL was serviced in February 2022 at 30,500km, since when some 4,000 kilometres have been travelled. Presented in a lovely condition commensurate with its low recorded mileage, the car passed a technical inspection in Feb 2022 with no comments. The original leather document pouch contains all original books, a Belgian registration document, and a Mercedes-Benz certificate of conformity.
