Having established itself in the front rank of the world's finest cars with the Dilambda, Lancia further enhanced its exalted position with a succession of fabulous coachbuilt models on the Astura chassis in the 1930s.

One of the most gifted automobile engineers of all time, Vincenzo Lancia founded his own company in 1906, having previously been in FIAT's employ as chief test driver. Introduced in 1907, the first Lancia car showed an independence of thought and defiance of convention that would remain associated with the marque well into the modern era. Military vehicles, lorries, vans and aircraft engines followed, the latter enabling Lancia to accrue valuable expertise in the design and construction of V-configuration power plants.

The introduction of the Astura and Artena in 1931 marked a switch from Lancia's system of model designation that used letters of the Greek alphabet in favour of one using Italian place names, a move in keeping with the nationalistic spirit of the age. One of Lancia's most important models, the Astura was powered by a new version of the familiar narrow-angle V8. Deemed insufficiently powerful for such a large car, the engine was enlarged from 2.6 to 3.0 litres on the Astura Series III in 1934 when the model also gained hydraulic brakes and became available in both short- and long-chassis forms. The Series IV featured a platform chassis of longer wheelbase, attracting some of the finest coachwork of the period, and was used extensively as official transportation by Italian government departments. Right-hand drive like all Lancias of the day, the Astura was exquisitely engineered and technologically advanced. Of the 2,946 Asturas produced, 421 were from the Series IV.

According to the Lancia Classiche Certificate of Origin (copy on file), this Lancia Astura four-door convertible was completed on 17th August 1939, a mere two weeks before the outbreak of World War II. Bodied by the newly established Carrozzeria Pinin Farina, the car was delivered new in Italy and is reputed to have belonged to the fascist dictator, Benito Mussolini.
Off the road for many years, the Astura was eventually purchased by Mr Giancarlo Cappa (KCS Restorations) whose write-up of its fascinating history and restoration is on file. Following the restoration's completion, the Astura was exhibited at the Villa d'Este Concours and at Monza on the occasion of the Formula 1 Grand Prix where the car caught the eye of former Formula 1 supremo, Bernie Ecclestone, who duly purchased it from Giancarlo Cappa and shipped it to the UK. The Lancia was registered in the UK as 'KXS 736' in 2019 and comes with a V5C document.

In 2020 the Astura was extensively restored by Jonathan Wood Vintage & Thoroughbred Restorations Ltd of Little Sampford, UK, a copy of whose detailed invoice for £11,898 is on file (perusal recommended). Finished in two-tone blue/grey with grey leather trim, the car comes with the aforementioned paperwork and an old Italian registration document. The Swiss customs duties have been paid.
