THE MERCEDES-BENZ 190SL

At the 1954 New York Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz displayed an elegant little two-seat roadster with a removable hardtop that had the looks of a younger sibling to the 300SL. After an incredibly positive response from the public, the new 190SL hit showrooms in 1955. Sharing components with the bread-and-butter Ponton sedans, the new 190SL was a more approachable, less complex sports car compared to the exotic 300SL. The 190SL featured a carbureted 1.9 liter inline four-cylinder engine as opposed to the 300SL's direct-injected 3-liter six, they shared a basic engine design, suspension system, and a level of detail and craftsmanship that defines Mercedes-Benz of the era.

Immediately recognizable as a Mercedes, some styling cues are borrowed from the 300SL – notably the prominent three-pointed star in the grille as well as the 'eyebrows' over the wheels. To control costs, the 190SL's shortened platform and chassis components were shared with the 190 sedan, tuned for confident handling.

While the 190SL may not have been an outright performance car, it was well balanced, stylish, and the impeccable quality made it a massive success – selling over 25,000 units before production ceased in 1963 – with many headed to the roadster-hungry USA market.

THE CAR OFFERED

This 1960 190SL is an honest and well-kept example that is a great pick for the driving enthusiast. A copy of the original Certificate of Ownership shows this car was delivered new in California and is said to have been a long-time resident of the Golden State. It has been in the care of the consignor since 2009, who acquired it in California and had it registered there before eventually bringing it East.

The accompanying Mercedes-Benz data card shows it was completed in March of 1961 and left the works finished in DB 050 White over Black leather (code 201) as it is presented today. It wears a well-maintained older restoration, and photos on file show it appears to have been refurbished from a sound original base. Authentic detailing ensures the classic elegance of the 190SL is preserved, with touches including the ivory-colored steering wheel, gear selector, and a Becker Mexico radio.

The engine bay is orderly and well-presented, with Weber DCOE-style Reedmoral carburetors replacing the original Solex PHH44s. Additionally, the original generator was replaced with an alternator. Per the data card, it retains its original, numbers-matching block.

The 190SL is a perennial favorite for collectors, offering a delightful driving experience, unsurpassed Mercedes-Benz quality, and beautiful styling in an approachable, user-friendly package.
