THE JAGUAR XK150
"The Jaguar XK150 is undeniably one of the world's fastest and safest cars. It is quiet and exceptionally refined mechanically, docile and comfortable... we do not know of any more outstanding example of value for money," declared The Autocar.
Introduced in 1957, the '150' is the ultimate expression of Jaguar's XK series. Revisions to the bodywork retained the traditional XK form but the revised fender line made room for a wider cowl and once-piece windshield which fed into thinner doors that much improved passenger comfort. Jaguar adopted the disc brakes which had so dramatically demonstrated their effectiveness in the C-types at Le Mans, improving not only braking performance but also the XK 150's marketing.
In standard form, it retained the 190bhp of its predecessor. But for those requiring a little more 'poke', 'Special Equipment' and 'S' versions came with 210 and 250bhp respectively, the latter delivering an astonishing 0-60mph time of 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 136mph.
At first the '150' was available in fixed and drophead coupé forms; the open roadster version didn't appear until the following year. The roadster version would become the rarest XK 150 model, now with rollup windows and thorough weather protection to make it the ideal vehicle for a day's enjoyment or a long trip through variable weather. Looks were not to be compromised, however, as the XK150 Roadster retained the traditional Roadster's windowsill dip and top that was fully enclosed when retracted for an especially attractive profile.
THE CAR OFFERED
According to the Jaguar Daimer Heritage Trust, this XK150 open 2-seat roadster was dispatched from Coventry to Jaguar Cars, New York on November 26, 1958, leaving the works in cream over black leather upholstery. This car came with the highest-performance option available at the time, the 3.4-liter 'S' engine, introduced in 1958. Equipped with a straight-port head, 9:1 compression pistons, dual exhaust, and triple SU carburetors this car additionally features the 4-speed manual gearbox with Laycock de Normanville overdrive, as denoted by the 'DN' suffix in the serial number. The extensive engine improvements to the 150 S saw it bumped to 250bhp, while 4-wheel disc brakes and refined suspension helped to make it the best driving of the XK series.
Wearing a well-preserved restoration in its original color scheme, this XK150 nicely suited to regular driving enjoyment to make the best of its punchy 250 horsepower 'six. Overall, the restoration retains authentic detailing, and the car displays a light patina, inviting regular use. The black leather-trimmed cabin is excellent, with taut seats and tidy Wilton carpeting. The engine bay is likewise orderly, with the signature alloy cam covers, trio of SU carburetors, and numbers-matching block and head per the Heritage Certificate.
Jaguar fans and classic enthusiasts in general recognize the XK150 as the best of the XK breed when it comes to performance and driver comfort, and with its desirable 'OTS' roadster body, high-performance S specification, and tidy, well-preserved restoration, this car becomes an appealing prospect to enter a wide range of rallies and events.
