THE CAR OFFERED
For the Camaro's sophomore year, Chevrolet continued to turn the screws on Ford, bringing more powerful big-block options to the pony car market, and keeping a nose ahead of the Mustang on the street and strip. While styling remained largely the same, some subtle changes were made – namely the new '68s did away with quarter vent windows, had an available rear spoiler, and incorporated revised side marker lights in compliance with federal regulations.
Representing the upper reaches of the Camaro specification for 1968 is this SS 396 Convertible from the Golden State Muscle Car Collection. Finished in its original shade of Matador Red over a red interior and white top, this is a highly optioned car that was originally retained by the General Motors fleet to be used by an employee, Mr. D.R. Paige.
Undoubtedly taking full advantage of his company car perks, Paige equipped his Super Sport Camaro convertible with air conditioning, pushbutton radio, center console, Rallye-Pack gauges, Rallye wheels, covered headlights, power brakes, and the L35 396 engine backed by a Hydramatic automatic transmission.
The all-red livery looks particularly sharp accented with the white top and white nose stripe, and the car is presented in excellent overall condition, with authentic detailing found throughout. Documentation on file includes original proof of ownership papers from GM in Mr. Paige's name, as well as a Georgia title from 1981, and assorted parts and maintenance receipts.
A great example of Chevy's iconic Camaro, this 1968 SS 396 Convertible is very well equipped for cruising, with plenty of power in reserve to get you to the next stoplight.
