THE CAR OFFERED
The Chevrolet Chevelle was, and remains, one of the most popular machines of the muscle car era. Chevrolet built more than 600,000 Chevelles, and countless examples have been lovingly restored, or reimagined into modernized 'restomods' for touring and show. While the bulk of production featured the venerable 350 cubic inch 'Smallblock' V8, a tiny fraction of those – believed to be just 4,475 – rolled out of the factory with the mighty SS 454 'LS6' engine. Rated at 450 horsepower, the LS6 was one of the most powerful engines of the era and could propel the big Chevelle down the strip in a storming 13.44 seconds at 108mph (Hot Rod Magazine).
From the Golden State Muscle Car Collection comes this rare slice of Chevrolet muscle, a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 Convertible, featuring the solid-lifter, high-compression LS6 option. The engine serial number carries the 'RV' suffix, denoting this as an LS6, and it also corresponds with the VIN, indicating it is an original numbers-matching example. Other options include the 4-speed Muncie M22 Rock Crusher transmission, power steering, and power brakes with discs up front.
It looks the part courtesy of its Cranberry Red paint, black stripes, Super Sport wheels, and optional Cowl Induction hood. The interior features black vinyl bucket seats, which correspond to the trim tag, as well as an original AM radio, three spoke steering wheel, and center console. The black soft top complements the black stripes and accents and is executed in authentic pinpoint vinyl as original.
The subject of an older, well-detailed restoration, this Chevelle remains in excellent condition thanks to careful preservation in the Collection. It is not known exactly how many of the 4,475 SS 454 LS6 Chevelles were convertibles, but regardless, this is undoubtedly a rare, highly collectible, and thrilling muscle car for the devoted enthusiast.
