This Lancia Artena arrived in the Netherlands as a short-wheelbase rolling chassis sometime between late 1935 and 1937. It was bodied by one of the most prominent coachbuilders in the Netherlands, B T Van Rijswijk of Voorburg, The Hague, who created its unique coachwork. Van Rijswijk was known for the high quality of their work, which included supplying bodies for the Royal House (on Minerva and Spijker chassis) among others. The Artena was only available with factory saloon coachwork or as a rolling chassis, Lancia being content to let independent coachbuilders cope with the demand for convertibles. This car is believed to be the only Lancia bodied by Van Rijswijk, whose design did away with the saloon's 'suicide' doors, the hinges being largely concealed within the body. The chrome side trim gives this convertible a particularly nice line, while another special feature is the winding rear side windows.

The Artena was first registered in the Netherlands on 6th January 1938 but the first owner is not known. From 21st to 30th January 1938, this Lancia was exhibited at the Nationale Auto RAI, on the stand of Lancia importer J W Lagerwij's Automobiel Maatschappij (stand 55/56). The exhibition catalogue describes the car and it also featured in a contemporary newspaper.

The history then jumps to 1950 when, after a thorough overhaul, the Lancia was bought by an Amsterdam pharmacist, J J de Bois, from the former garage De Bruin of Rijksstraatweg in Doorn. De Bois family legend has it that the Lancia was stored in a haystack during the Second World War. The provincial registration number 'GX-25815' was assigned on 29th April 1950, changing in 1956 to 'UD-59-64'. In the early 1960s, the car ceased to run and was sold to the well-known Amsterdam-based Bugatti and art collector, Pim Hascher.

In 1974, the Van Rijswijk Lancia was sold in the same non-running condition to a close friend. The latter started restoration work in the period 1974-1977, and the car was completely rebuilt and finished in red. The Lancia was regularly used for rallies and rides up to 1986 when it was consigned to garage storage at a residential house. After the then owner's death, the Lancia was sold to the current vendor in a condition requiring restoration. Fortunately the original colours were found on some panels, and the Artena was returned to the colour scheme as delivered by Van Rijswijk.

Accompanying this unique car is an extensive file containing documents, catalogues, articles, an original instruction booklet and various photographs. After its restoration at Classic-Job in Dalfsen, this one-off Lancia was displayed at the Concours de Élégance in Soestdijk in 2022, which showcased Dutch bodywork (a lengthy article was written about it).
