Styled in-house by Bill Towns, the beautiful DBS was Aston Martin's first all-new model for many years and caused quite a stir on its arrival in 1967, Autocar magazine observing that: "Without the aid of an Italian stylist the Newport Pagnell team came up with something as modern, handsome and Italianate as anything from the Turin coachbuilders at that time."

Although always intended to house the new Tadek Marek-designed V8 engine, the DBS first appeared with the 4.0-litre 'six' of the concurrently produced DB6. This well proven engine was available in standard tune, producing 282bhp or, as a no cost option, to Vantage specification with triple Weber 45DCOE carburettors, special camshafts, and a higher compression ratio, in which form its maximum was raised to 325bhp.

Beneath its shapely exterior the DBS employed a platform-type chassis with wishbone and coil-spring suspension at the front, De Dion with Watts linkage at the rear. Larger and more luxuriously appointed than the DB6, the DBS was, inevitably, heavier, though the Vantage version's top speed of 140mph and a standing quarter-mile time of 16.3 seconds were highly respectable figures nonetheless. Assessing the virtues of Aston's new flagship, Autocar judged it superior to the DB6 in many areas, the bigger DBS offering four full-sized seats in addition to transformed handling and roadholding courtesy of the new rear suspension and standardised power steering.

Although less well known as such than the earlier 'DB' series, the DBS is yet another 'James Bond' Aston Martin, having featured in the 1969 motion picture, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, starring George Lazenby as the eponymous secret agent.

This DBS Vantage's copy guarantee form shows that it was delivered to its first owner in the Saint-Jacques neighbourhood in Grasse, South of France with first registration 952 KJ 06. The owner was none other than Cuthbert Euan Charles Rabagliati (1892-1978): soldier, pilot, amateur racing driver and diplomat, who, as a Royal Flying Corps officer in WWI, is credited as the first RFC pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft. He raced at Brooklands in the 1930s and when WW2 broke out returned to active duty with the British Secret Intelligence Service, serving as head of MI6's Dutch section. After the war Rabagliati served as the British vice-consul in San Francisco, eventually retiring to the South of France.

Rabagliati's DBS Vantage was originally finished in Special Red with matching Connolly leather interior, and left the factory equipped with the ZF manual gearbox, air conditioning, power assisted steering, Bosch New Yorker radio, and Fiamm horns among other special items.

The DBS was purchased privately by our vendor in February 2007 from its owner in Saint-Ouen, France. Some years later the Aston was despatched to renowned marque specialists Roos Engineering in Holland for extensive restoration (see photographic record and invoices on file). This car has also been converted from manual to automatic transmission. Kept on static display as part of the owner's extensive private collection, the Aston will require recommissioning before returning to the road. Additional documentation consists of copies of the 2007 sales agreement and a photocopy of the cancelled French Carte grise.
