Government legislation had effectively killed off France's few surviving luxury car manufacturers after WW2, but that did not deter Facel boss Jean Daninos in his bold attempt to revive what had once been a great French motoring tradition in the form of the Vega. A luxurious Grande Routière, the Vega featured supremely elegant coupé bodywork welded to a tubular-steel chassis. There being no suitable French-built power unit, Daninos turned to the USA. The engine chosen initially was Chrysler's 4.5-litre, 180bhp V8, while there was a choice of push-button automatic or Pont-à-Mousson four-speed manual transmissions.
Improvements to the first FV model were not long in coming, the FV1, introduced in March 1955, featuring a lengthened wheelbase for increased rear seat room and a 4.8-litre, 200bhp Chrysler V8. Introduced later that same year, the FV2 featured a wraparound windscreen and a 'trompe-l'œl' metal dashboard hand-painted to look like burr wood veneer. Maximum power went up to 250bhp, increasing to 285bhp on the FV2B of 1956. The availability of Chrysler engines enforced a drop in power to 200bhp on the face-lifted FV3, a retrograde step that was remedied by a switch to a 301ci (4.9-litre) 253bhp V8 for 1957 on the mildly restyled FV3B. Despite the addition of the 5.8-litre FV4 to the range for 1958, the FV3 and FV3B continued to be available. Total production of FV-series cars amounted to 357 units.
This rare FV3 was delivered on 17th April 1957, a year in which Facel's annual production, which had been increasing steadily if unspectacularly, reached the dizzying heights of an estimated 118 cars. The Facel was sold new in Portugal by the local importer Guérin and was part of the hidden collection of 180 'barn finds' discovered there in 2007. The owner of this amazing collection was a motor dealer in the 1970s/1980s, who had a habit of saving the more interesting cars that came his way.
Bought by a Portuguese collector, the Facel was intended for restoration. Our vendor purchased the car in 2015 from this Portuguese collector and decided to fully restore it from the ground upwards, a process that took some four years to complete. The stages of the restoration are documented in a huge file of photographs and invoices totalling circa €100,000 (inspection recommended). The car has the more powerful FV3B engine, a five-speed manual gearbox and electric power steering, desirable upgrades that contribute to the amazing driving experience.
An exciting combination of elegant European style and American V8 power, the Facel Vega is a worthy successor to the legendary French Grandes Routières of pre-war days. Presented in wonderful condition, this fully restored and sensibly upgraded FV3 is offered with Portuguese registration documents, Contrôle Technique valid until 2027, and the aforementioned restoration records.
