Unveiled on the luxury 501 saloon in 1954, the latest new BMW V8 showed undeniable potential as a sports car engine. BMW was encouraged by the enterprising Max Hoffman, originally from Austria, and at the time an importer of many European marques to the United States, who knew the person capable of designing such a car, Count Albrecht von Goertz, a freelance industrial designer who had worked with the legendary Raymond Loewy on Studebakers in the latest fashion.
Goertz was asked to prepare two different designs, which made their respective debuts as prototypes at the 1955 Frankfurt Motor Show. The more conservative of the two - the 503 - used the chassis of the 502 saloon, its suspension and its column-mounted gear shift, while the 507 was built on a much shorter wheelbase, which allowed the gearbox to be assembled directly next to the engine (the 503 Series II, unveiled in 1957, used the same engine/transmission configuration as the 507 with floor-mounted gear shift). As installed on the 503 with its alloy coachwork, the V8 3.2l produced 138bhp, sufficient for a top speed of 118mph. With its long bonnet, its 2+2 passenger compartment and its generously-sized boot, the 503 was the perfect illustration of an executive car. Even Pinin Farina was impressed, declaring it the finest car in the show. Had the 507 not debuted at the same time, it would surely have been the most memorable too.
The high-performance V8-engine BMWs of the 1950s attracted an exclusive client base of connoisseurs, even including a few well-known names from motorsports. Expensive and exclusive, the 503 was built in both coupé and cabriolet models, with 273 and 139 delivered, respectively, between 1956 and 1960.

Undoubtedly delivered new in France on 28 October 1958, this BMW 503 Series II Coupé entered Mr Christian Larmet's collection in the 1980s, then registered 347 FNN 75. Christian Larmet is a major figure in the world of BMW in France: the former chairman of the French BMW Club, he also ran the well-known Haussmann BMW showroom in Paris. In the 1990s, the 503 underwent significant restoration. While the coachwork was restored by the highly respected coachbuilder, André Lecocq, most of the work was done directly in-house by the Garage Haussmann.
In 1998, after Mr Larmet's death, the car was acquired by its current owner. In the hands of this latter, a great BMW fan, the 503 took part in various events in France: Le Mans Classic, Rétromobile (on the BMW stand), L'Age d'Or in Montlhéry and BMW Orleans' (Dupont s.a.) anniversary, at which it drove the representative of BMW France onto the stage of the Zénith concert venue. After more than 20 years' loyal service, from concours d'élégance, to rallies of all kinds, and various weddings, the 503 was in need of some care. As such, the coachwork, which had a few faults, received paint touch ups, and the bumpers were also replaced with new parts. Lastly, a full service was carried out to allow the car to get back on the road in the hands of its future owner.
We were able to test drive this BMW over around 12 miles and can therefore attest that it is in working order.
