1908 Franklin Model G 16hp Runabout

1908 Franklin Model G 16hp Runabout
Chassis no. 7614 G
Engine no. 12282

• Air-cooled four-cylinder engine
• Present ownership since 1990
• Restored in Belgium in 1993
• Starts and runs with a valid Contrôle Technique

America's longest-lived and most successful air-cooled automobile, the Franklin was the work of engineer John Wilkinson, whose innovative design, produced in prototype form for the New York Automobile Company, was taken up by Syracuse-based die-casting manufacturer Herbert H Franklin. Franklin's company sold its first car (a runabout) in June 1902 and a dozen more before the year's end. In an age when the customary power unit for such a vehicle was a water-cooled single-cylinder, Wilkinson's 1.7-litre, air-cooled four was highly unusual. The Franklin's other advanced features included overhead valves (inlets mechanically operated from 1905), throttle speed control, float-type carburettor, two-speed planetary transmission and full-elliptic springing.

This Franklin's early history is not known prior to the 1970s when it was owned by a Mr Randolph Fuller of Naples, Florida. Sold to Mr Sam Del Russo in December 1985, the car was purchased by the late owner in 1990 in Massachusetts, USA. In 1993 the Franklin was restored in Belgium with the assistance of the collection's dedicated mechanic. The car was road-registered in Belgium in June 1993 and with its late owner participated in the 1994 Laurent Perrier Rally (photographs on file). Always kept in running condition by the collection's mechanic, this Franklin runabout is presented in lovely condition, starting and running, although it has been used infrequently. The car is offered with restoration photographs; Florida title from the 1970s; Franklin instruction book/owner's manual (copy); some notes and model history; and current Belgian registration documents and Contrôle Technique valid until May 2025.

1908 Franklin Model G 16 ch Runabout
Châssis n° 7614 G
Moteur n° 12282
