c.1930 Amilcar CS8 Cabriolet

c.1930 Amilcar CS8 Cabriolet
Engine no. 333

• One of only 350 built, of which an estimated 50 survive
• Believed one of 10 survivors with this type of body
• Engine rebuilt circa 1999/2000 (with steel con-rods)
• Interesting and very rare restoration project to complete

Amilcar was founded by Andre Morel and engineer Edmond Moyet to build cyclecars with sufficient performance for Morel to realise his dream of competition success. Emile Akar, a Paris businessman, and Joseph Lamy, an executive at cyclecar maker Le Zebre, backed Morel's and Moyet's prototype, which was enthusiastically received. Powered by a diminutive 904cc four-cylinder sidevalve engine, Amilcar's first model, the CC, commenced production in 1921. The CC was praised for its excellent, responsive handling and adequate power, attracting a large and loyal following and setting the pattern for future models. It also provided Morel with his desired competition success when he became the 1100cc Class champion of France in 1922.

Extending its range upmarket, Amilcar introduced its first six-cylinder production model, the C6, in 1926, which was followed three years later by the eight-cylinder C8. The production C8 started life with a single-overhead-camshaft engine of 1,994cc, which was enlarged to 2,331cc in 1931 on the upgraded C8bis and CS8 models. The C8 was usually sold in rolling chassis form for bodying by independent coachbuilders. Approximately 350 had been made when production ceased at the end of 1932. It is estimated that only some 50 or so survive.

The ultra-rare CS8 we offer once belonged to a Mr Deschamps, an Amilcar collector living near Bordeaux, who sold the car through La Vie de l'Auto to a Mr Chabot in 1995. In 1999/2000 the engine was rebuilt by a previous owner, an Airbus engineer, who replaced the aluminium con-rods (a known weak point of these cars) with new modern steel components. 'Tous Les Moteurs' manufactured a new camshaft in 2001.

The current owner had this model on his shopping list of cars to buy for a long time and in 40 years this is the only one he was able to find for sale! The car needs a thorough completion of the restoration but one which will be very worthwhile as these cars are extremely rare, particularly with this pretty body. The vendor believes there are only 10 known to exist. Offered with a large file of general Amilcar and C8-related information.

Footnotes

Circa 1930 Amilcar CS8 Cabriolet

Moteur n° 333
