1905 Automobiles Eugène Brillié 20/24 HP Coupé Chauffeur

1905 Automobiles Eugène Brillié 20/24 HP Coupé Chauffeur

• 4-cylinder 20/24 HP Engine
• Exceptionally rare and useable Veteran car
• Recorded history from new and offered for the first time in circa 50 years.

The story of the gifted engineer Eugène Brillié is a fascinating one. His association with Gustave Gobron and the founding of the Gobron-Brillié motor manufacturing concern propelled him to notoriety thanks to the innovative opposed-piston engine design of their cars and their competition success which saw the marque claim speed records including the first car to reach 160 kph! In 1903 Eugène Brillié left the firm and struck out on his own, to found Automobiles Eugène Brillié in association with the Schneider armaments firms of Le Havre. His first cars were built in 1903 with a conventional two-cylinder 12HP design, followed in 1904 by a 20HP 4-cylinder engine. Two variants of this engine were built a 18/22 HP and more powerful 20/24 HP. Private car production ceased in 1908 but with Eugene Brillié at the helm, Schneider continued to build commercial vehicles, omnibuses and eventually designed the French army's first tank, the Schneider CA1.

The early history of this 1905 20/24 HP model was extensively researched and recorded by its long-term owner Mr Christopher Jaques. According to his research he was able to trace the car's UK history back to 1914. Apparently the first British owners had rented the car in France for a touring holiday, and being suitably impressed with it decided to acquire the car and import it to England via Southampton whereupon it acquired the number plate AA 286. The car was used up until 1928 and serviced during this time by Imperial Motor Works in Lyndhurst. The car remained hidden until being discovered in the 1950s by a Mr George Sparshott. In September 1969 the car was advertised in the Veteran Car Club newsletter by member, Mr Philip Shaw, who in ill-health was looking to pass the car to a younger enthusiast who would be able to finish the restoration he had always hoped to complete. The car passed to Mr David Hales who carried out a mechanical restoration and helpfully recorded much of this early history. There are some fascinating pictures which appear to date from around this time showing the very complete car missing only its wings, perhaps about to enter restoration for the first time.

Noted collector Mr Christopher Jaques acquired the car from David Hales in the late 1970s and added it to his impressive collection, which included at the time numerous French Veteran cars, as well as some important pre- and post-war competition cars. Interestingly many will recognise the Jaques name, as Mr Christopher Jaques managed, alongside his brother, the illustrious firm of Jaques of London, famed for their Croquet sets and for having invented the game of Ping-Pong which his grandfather patented in 1901. He embarked on a full and exacting restoration of the car which was completed by the early 1990s. This included recovering fragments of the original interior and commissioning a beautiful recreation of the original cabin. The rarity of the car was always part of its appeal, however the time and effort required to research a possibly unique car made, explains in large part the lengthy restoration process.
The car was used extensively during Mr Jaques' ownership, being a regular sight on the roads of Sussex and Kent. Thanks to its large 4-cylinder engine the car delivers a very useable turn of speed and soon became one of the most exercised cars in the collection. Offered today by Christopher Jaques' children following his passing in 2023 this exceptionally rare and imposing veteran is perhaps the last surviving example of its kind, a museum quality but useable Veteran car which returns to France for the first time since 1914.

Automobiles Eugène Brillié 20/24 HP coupé-chauffeur 1905

• Moteur 4 cylindres 20/24 HP
