"The latest and best incarnation of the Turbo-look theme, the C4S places the emphasis on style, traction and braking. Given the normally aspirated engine's relatively modest 286bhp, the Carrera 4 underpinnings and the Turbo's super-wide tyres and tremendous brakes make this easily the most 'over-chassied' of the current 911s. Good for 170mph (274km/h) even so." - Complete Car, April 1996.
An important landmark in the Porsche 911's continuing development arrived for 1994 with introduction of the Type 993 version, destined to be the last to use the air-cooled engine that had been a distinguishing feature of the 911 since its introduction 30 years previously. Today the Type 993 is regarded by many as the most beautiful 911 of all. Over the years the 911 had received numerous aerodynamic and safety-inspired add-ons, diluting the purity of the original form; the Type 993's arrival marked a return to basic principles, being recognisably a 911 but one in which all functions had been harmoniously integrated in a truly outstanding example of modern automotive styling. The range offered remained pretty much as before, comprising two- and four-wheel drive Carrera 2/4 models, the legendary Turbo, and the Cabriolet convertible, all powered by the latest 3.6-litre version of Porsche's perennial flat-six engine. Along with the sleeker bodywork came new multi-link rear suspension that improved both ride quality and roadholding, reducing the 911's characteristic lift-off oversteer. The 3.6-litre engine not only produced more power than before but made it available over a wider rev range thanks to 'Variocam' variable valve timing and variable-length air intakes. The Type 993 was also the first 911 to feature a six-speed gearbox.
The 1997 car offered here is an example of the normally aspirated, four-wheel-drive Carrera 4S, which shared the Turbo's chassis, brakes and more aggressive-looking body. Built to European specification and delivered new by Porsche Frankfurt on 27th March 1997, this car is finished in the very desirable colour combination of dark grey with a black interior. It has had four owners in total and was bought by the current vendor on 7th April 2023.
The current odometer reading is under 116,500 kilometres and the Porsche comes with a Car Pass certifying the readings between 2001 and 2017: 77,985km on 6th June 2001 and 115,273 on 6th February 2017. The accompanying service book records the following services, both carried out by Kronos Porsche Centre in Belgium: 18th August 2009 at 99,990km and 1st August 2012 at 106,016km, the latter being its most recent service. The last Contrôle Technique was carried out on 29th June 2023. The car is offered with a cancelled Belgian registration document and various service invoices.
