THE STUTZ MODEL K

Although best known for racing and its legendary Bearcat model, the Stutz line also produced some sporty touring cars such as the Bulldog Tourer. The Bulldog was the practical cousin to the Bearcat; both cars were mechanically identical to each other. However, the Bulldog was built on a 10" longer wheelbase, and it gave away very little in terms of performance. The car's body was narrow and close coupled and by no means heavy. The practicality of the Bulldog has made them a favorite for touring as there is always plenty of room for luggage and guests.

This Bulldog was part of Don and Lynette Short Collection that Bonhams sold in 2011. Acquired by Don Short in 1951, it is very likely the machine that launched Don's love for Stutz and anchored his collection.

This Bulldog is powered by the same dual-valve four as the Bearcat. The Tourer is even fitted with a full set of wire wheels – a rare feature on an American touring car of the era. The back of the car is finished of with a set of twin spares and the nicely patinated wood dash is equipped with a full complement of instruments.

The car's early history is not documented but there are wonderful black and white photos of the car parked on the street in the late 1930s complete with pinup girls painted on the doors in nose art fashion. Lovingly maintained, preserved, and toured by the Short family, it was purchased at the 2011 collection sale by a prominent Seattle-area enthusiast. Cosmetically and mechanically refurbished shortly after acquisition, it received a fresh paintjob in the current ochre color it wears today along with a sympathetic interior retrim that preserved what original leather could be kept and a new top. Passing through a couple of owners in the last dozen years, it is offered here as a rare opportunity to acquire a fine, Nickel Era touring car.

This is a wonderfully appealing example of a seldom seen model. Many of these tourers were converted into Bearcats and few remain today. Today this car survives as a benchmark example. This is a highly recommended machine for any collector who appreciates originality and authenticity.
