THE PORSCHE 914

First seen at the 1969 Frankfurt Auto Show, the 914/4 used the 1,679cc, four-cylinder, air-cooled engine of the Volkswagen 411 while the top-of-the-line 914/6 was powered by the Porsche 911T's 2.0-liter six-cylinder unit, which was installed at the Zuffenhausen-based Porsche factory where the 914/6 was finished off. Both cars employed all-independent suspension, a mixture of 911 and VW parts, to which four-wheel disc brakes were married and a five-speed transaxle was mated to the mid-mounted engine.

The 914's reputation for excellent handling was somewhat marred by criticism that the four-cylinder version was too slow, though lack of speed was never a shortcoming of the 914/6. Now armed with a more powerful engine, the 914/6 was able to back up that go-kart like handling with a much needed performance boost. To offset the extra weight of adding the 6-cylinder 911T engine, Porsche used lower gear ratios and higher brake gearing to achieve a better driving experience, even with the added weight.

THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

Completed at Porsche in May 1971, this rare 914/6 Targa was finished in Signal Orange over a black leatherette interior, just as it appears today. The powerful six-cylinder Porsche was prepared for the US market, and equipped with electric heated rear window, limited slip differential, tinted windshield, antenna with Loudspeaker & noise suppression and light metal wheels. This Porsche was delivered new to a Mr. Vernon W Gurzenoa of Somerset, Pennsylvania on July 20, 1971 with a mere 30 miles on the odometer. It is unclear how long Mr. Gurzenoa held on to the car, although judging from the included original maintenance record booklet, this Porsche was serviced at the same Pittsburgh authorized Porsche dealership from new until the recorded services ceased to be entered after the car achieved 56,600 miles.

Eventually, the Porsche made its way into the hands of former racing driver and race team owner, Mr. Chip Ganassi. Being the team owner of Chip Ganassi Racing and a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame means the staff and headquarters would be fully prepared to handle a nut and bolt restoration on a car. That is exactly what the Chip Ganassi Racing team did, they completed a full restoration for their legendary owner in the car's original color combination. The restoration is documented with photos in the CD which is included in the file for this vehicle. The car is equipped with its numbers matching engine and gearbox and will come accompanied with a Porsche issued Certificate of Authenticity as well as its original owner's manual and maintenance booklet in its original pouch. This Porsche is further equipped with its front mounted spare tire as well as the jack.

The 914/6 presents in very excellent condition throughout with an extremely clean, well done interior. The car was believed to be in the ownership of Mr. Ganassi approximately 2012 until around 2017, where the car was acquired by its current owner. This example is listed in the 914/6 Registry, and it is showing an odometer reading of less than 61,000 miles which is believed to be the car's original mileage. Fitted with Fuchs wheels and its eye catching Signal Orange paint, this Porsche is an absolute stunner. During its current ownership, this vehicle was maintained well and even underwent an entire engine overhaul to ensure great performance and reliability. Recent receipts totaling over $38,950 will be included with the car, showing that the car only covered several hundred miles on its fresh and updated engine setup. Truly a wonderful opportunity to obtain one of the nicest and most sorted 914/6 available.
