1934 Lagonda M35R 3½-Litre T9 style open tourer

1934 Lagonda M35R 3½-Litre T9 style open tourer
Registration no. WS 5888
Chassis no. Z11270

• One of an estimated 65 3½-Litre cars built
• Originally bodied as a saloon
• Fitted with replica T9 Tourer coachwork

The Lagonda M35R model was built in 1935 to provide a bridge between the departing 3-Litre model and the new Meadows 4½ Litre engined M45. Its 3½ litre six cylinder seven bearing crackshaft engine was a development of the 3-Litre unit using a redesigned block which allowed for the requisite bigger cylinder bores. The car used a Rapide chassis (Z11270) designed by Lagonda for the Meadows engine with the most obvious obvious external difference to be 3-Litre being much larger brake drums- a very useful feature on the 3½ litre car, with a higher top speed.
The Lagonda club records indicate that this car, which had Silent Travel Pillarless saloon coachwork, was supplied on 12 December 1934, it is thought through dealers Burton and Tweedy, and was first registered on 14th September 1935. Its original number plate (retained today) was a WS plate, the prefix issued in Edinburgh/Leith.
The clubs next record of the car is in November 1955 when it was in Musselburgh, 6 miles from Edinburgh. In 1975 it is recorded in Beverley Yorkshire, and in Clitheroe in Lancashire. In 1996 it was acquired by a gentlemen in Penzance, Cornwall, Bonhams offered the car for sale in 2006 on his behalf.
The car is now offered for sale with a V5C only. However as stated in the 2006 Bonhams catalogue where we last sold the car, it was re-bodied by Don Hoggard as a T9 Tourer in the early 1980s. After purportedly changing hands through a series of auctions, the Lagonda was acquired by an owner in County Wicklow, Republic of Ireland in 2009.

Since being with the current vendor's family, the car has been used sparingly as part of a significant collection of Bentley motor cars. When the Lagonda was last used the vendor informs us it was 'in top notch condition', though interested parties should note the car has been in secure storage since 2017. The example on offer combines first class replica T9 four seat tourer coachwork with gleaming paintwork and upholstery to match. It also benefits from a recent radiator overhaul.

Combining strong performance and real style, this Lagonda M35R represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire one of these rare and exciting post-Vintage motor cars.

Saleroom notices

Interested parties should note that though the car has been recently driven by our vendor, the starter motor appears to have stuck on arrival at the sale.
