1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S Sunroof Saloon Chassis no. 220S/180011N 8516058 Engine no. 1809211N8511672
"The 220 S is very similar to the superseded model 220, but now achieves 100mph by virtue of a two-carburettor manifold on the 2.2-litre six-cylinder engine. The output is 112bhp and chassis features include the low-pivot swing axle at the rear and Alfin brake drums in front." - Road & Track.
Together with the models 190 and 219, the 220 S saloon debuted at the 1956 Frankfurt Show as a more refined successor to the 220. Like the contemporary 180, the new trio featured unitary construction 'ponton' bodyshells and had independent suspension all round and drum brakes. Powered by an up-rated (100bhp DIN, 112bhp SAE) version of the 219's 2,195cc single-overhead-camshaft six-cylinder engine, the 220 S was good for a top speed of around 100mph. A shorter wheelbase was adopted for the Cabriolet model that appeared in May 1956 and also for the Coupé introduced the following year when the Hydrak semi-automatic transmission become available as an option. Apart from a power increase to 106bhp DIN in 1957, the 220 S changed little in the course of its comparatively short life, production ceasing in October 1959. Autocar magazine never got around to testing the 220 S but had found that its essentially similar 220a predecessor offered "a remarkable combination of high performance, comfort, solidity of construction, and economy of running, which earns the deepest respect".
This left-hand drive example has an 'mph' speedometer and gauges labelled in English, suggesting it was built for the North American market. The car has been on static display with the present owners for circa 10 years, will require recommissioning, and is offered with no documents or paperwork.
