Footnotes

Already the majority shareholder in the combined Hillman/Humber concern, Rootes completed its takeover in 1931. Under Rootes' guidance, Hillman concentrated on models with mass-market appeal while Humber was pitched at a wealthier and more discerning clientele. The Super Snipe first appeared in the late 1930s, finding a ready market within the ranks of Civil Service officialdom and the middle class professions, The first major mechanical revision came in 1952 when a new chassis was introduced and the long-running sidevalve six replaced by an overhead-valve Commer unit. Re-styled at the same time, this new Super Snipe progressed through Marks IV, IVA and IVB before being superseded by the unitary construction Series I in 1958. The Series I Super Snipe's new bodyshell was shared with the contemporary four-cylinder Hawk, but the former's engine was an all-new 2.65-litre six-cylinder unit. Improvements to the Super Snipe appeared almost annually: a 2.96-litre engine and front-wheel disc brakes arriving in 1959 (Series II); a four-headlamp front end in 1960 (Series III). Production of these large, luxurious Humbers finally ceased in 1967.

Representing the very best of British motoring luxury, this automatic-transmission Super Snipe estate carwas acquired approximately 10 years ago and has since been on static display. Sadly, no paperwork is available and it will require some re-commissioning prior to road use. Stylish yet practical, this is the perfect companion for family picnics at this year's historic motoring events.
