The 940 and 960 models spelt the end of Volvo's rear-drive ranges, but even today their build quality and performance – along with good fuel economy – never fails to impress. The estate 940 and 960 models remain truly viable, slightly off-the-radar alternatives to the Mercedes-Benz W124 models, the Volvo arguably being the superior driver's car. Here is a high-pressure turbo 940 with an interesting specification, packing electric front windows and electric mirrors and power steering, but without a sunroof. Bodily it remains in very good order, with no signs of corrosion and typically Volvo-accurate shutlines, set off by the rarely-ordered (yet highly attractive) metallic Aconite: The engine bay is equally tidy. The cloth interior has survived very well and shows lttle sign of wear, the headlining being especially good. While there is no service history, old MoT test certificates substantiate the mileage. Coming with new rear tyres, the original toolkit and an alloy spare wheel (as opposed to a spacesaver) this 940 estate is clearly one that got away, and should reward its new owner handsomely.
