Footnotes

This rare Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL 3.5 was purchased by the legendary Italian tenor relatively early in his career (he only made his United States breakthrough in 1972 at New York's Metropolitan Opera).

The 3.5-litre version of the 280 SEL saloon typifies the resurgence of larger-engined Mercedes-Benz models that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the progressive easing of fiscal constraints, which had dissuaded customers from buying cars with large-capacity engines, encouraged the German manufacturer to offer bigger, more potent power units. Mercedes-Benz's new 3.5-litre V8 engine had debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Show in the 280 SE coupé and convertible. This all-new, state-of-the-art power unit produced 200bhp (DIN) courtesy of Bosch electronic fuel injection and transistorised ignition. This was some 40 horsepower more than the existing 2.8-litre six, so performance was greatly increased.

When the V8 was installed in the long-wheelbase 280 SEL saloon, the marriage resulted in a fast and well equipped 'Gentleman's Express' combining 125mph (200km/h) performance with considerable luxury. Running gear was pretty much state-of-the-art from the time, consisting of independent suspension all round and four-wheel dual-circuit disc brakes. One of the rarer mass-produced Mercedes-Benz saloons - only 951 had been completed when production ceased in August 1972 - the 280 SEL 3.5 is today much sought-after by discerning collectors.

Luciano Pavarotti must have been very fond of this car as he kept the spacious limousine until 1983 when it was sold to another resident of Pavarotti's hometown of Modena. The car changed hands a couple of times more before the consignor's father purchased it in 2002 and has always resided near Modena.

This car's specification is unusual in that rather than the customary automatic transmission it was ordered with the four-speed manual gearbox, a sportier option. The interior is trimmed in the famously long-lasting MB-Tex and to this day hardly shows any signs of wear, contrasting beautifully with the silver-metallic exterior. A Frigette air conditioning system is installed also. Although the car has remained largely untouched, it has benefited from considerable work in recent years, including a full service, new front and rear shock absorbers, and a comprehensive overhaul of the braking system. The car is offered with a list of the aforementioned works, an ASI certificate, and Italian registration documents.

A clearly well cared-for car, owned for much of its early life by arguably the greatest tenor of recent times, this superb 280 SEL 3.5 is one for the true Pavarotti and Mercedes-Benz enthusiast.
