THE SILVER SPUR
The Rolls-Royce Silver Spur is the long-wheelbase counterpart to the Silver Spirit and represents one of the last traditionally styled Rolls-Royce saloons before the brand entered the modern BMW-era design language. Introduced in 1980, the Silver Spur combined stately presence, exceptional ride comfort, and hand-crafted luxury in a package aimed at owners who preferred to be driven as much as to drive themselves.
Distinguished by its extended wheelbase, the Silver Spur offered significantly increased rear passenger space, making it especially popular among executives, dignitaries, and luxury chauffeur services. Its classic upright grille, Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, long hood, and restrained body lines embodied the timeless Rolls-Royce aesthetic of the era.
Power came from Rolls-Royce's smooth and torque-rich 6.75-liter V8 engine paired with an automatic transmission, delivering effortless acceleration and near-silent cruising rather than outright performance. The famous self-leveling suspension system provided the "magic carpet ride" Rolls-Royce became known for, prioritizing isolation and comfort above all else.
Inside, the cabin was meticulously finished with hand-selected wood veneers, deep Connolly leather seating, thick carpeting, and extensive sound insulation. Rear passengers enjoyed limousine-like accommodations with generous legroom and an atmosphere designed around comfort and refinement.
Throughout its production run, the Silver Spur evolved through several generations including the Silver Spur II, III, and IV, each bringing incremental improvements in technology, suspension, and interior refinement while maintaining the model's traditional character.
Today, the Silver Spur is appreciated as one of the final truly old-school Rolls-Royces — elegant, imposing, and unapologetically luxurious, with a presence that remains unmistakable decades after its introduction.
