THE ALFA ROMEO GIULIETTA

"The Giulietta Spider must have been quite a shock to the other manufacturers of small sports cars when it was first released to the public. Suddenly, there was a new state of the art. With its roll-up windows, excellent ride and delightfully simple top mechanism, the Spider made all the other sporting vehicles of 1955 look terribly dated." - Joe Benson, Alfa Romeo Buyer's Guide.

With the introduction of the Giulietta, Alfa Romeo established the 'small car, big performance' formula that would characterize the Milanese marque's finest offerings from then on. First of the Giuliettas, the Bertone-styled Giulietta Sprint Coupé debuted at the Turin Motor Show in April 1954, powered by a 1.3-liter, all-alloy version of Alfa's classic twin-cam four designed by one-time Ferrari engineer Giuseppe Busso. Without equal at the time, this wonderful engine produced 80bhp in the regular Spider and 90 horsepower in the Veloce version that followed.

The original 750-Series Giulietta Sprint Coupé of 1954 was soon joined by Berlina and Spider versions. Designed and built by Pininfarina and notable as the famous Turin coachbuilder's first volume-produced car, the Spider brought a level of refinement and mechanical sophistication to small sports cars that made the opposition look dated. The combination of a rev-happy engine, fine-handling, responsive chassis and excellent brakes make these Giuliettas a driver's car par excellence and explains why these stylish Alfa Romeos continue to attract the discerning enthusiast today.

THE CAR OFFERED

This example, chassis AR149505063, was delivered new to legendary importer Max Hoffman in New York City in December 1958 and is accompanied by an Alfa Romeo Certificato di Origine and Centro Documentazione correspondence confirming its identity, with block stamping AR1315*31917* consistent with all factory records. The car underwent a comprehensive refurbishment between 2008 and 2012 by Alfisti Motorsports of Bloomington, Illinois, which included auto body rotisserie after which the car was refinished in red — departing from its original Celeste Blue. The 1,290cc twin-cam inline-four was rebuilt and so was the transmission. As recently as in 2023 the original cold air intake was reinstalled, the twin Webers were registered and synchronized and a new starter motor and battery were installed by Dominick's Shop of White Plain, NY. In 2026 the suspension and braking systems were overhauled, with original front drums reinstalled by The Paddock Shop in New Britain, CT., At the same time the oil was changed, and a new exhaust was installed.

The cockpit is trimmed in black leather with red piping, complemented by a black dash pad, black door panels, and replacement carpeting beneath rubber floor mats. The Veloce-specification Veglia instrumentation — comprising an 8,000rpm tachometer, 140mph speedometer, and combination fuel/oil temperature/coolant gauge — has been overhauled by Palo Alto Speedometer. The five-digit odometer reads 3,000 miles; total mileage is unknown. Additional fittings include lap belts, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a heater, and a Giulietta gearshift wearing a red gaiter. The 15-inch Borrani steel wheels are fitted with chrome hubcaps and period-correct 165-series Pirelli Cinturato tires. Equipment further includes a black folding soft top, chrome bumpers and brightwork, Lucas taillamps, and Pinin Farina coachbuilder badges. Additionally, this Spider Veloce won the 2011 AROC 1st place Trophy and is accompanied with its judging certificate and a picture of the Trophy

Subsequently, the car was in a couple of important private collections between 2018 and 2023.

Acquired by the current owner in 2023, the Giulietta Spider Veloce is offered with service and refurbishment records, the Certificato di Origine from Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo documentation, and a clean Connecticut title. It also includes all parts to reinstall front disc brakes if so desired, a digital version of original owner manual and part catalog.
