c.1895 Unidentified Tricycle with Starley Axle

Equipped with a front Warna (Birmingham) lamp and a rear Lucas mounted cycle lamp, as well as a cycle pump. The machine is fitted with a Raleigh Record 37-590 (26 x 1 3/8) front tyre and Hindustan 26 x 2 1 3/4 rear tyres. The unmarked leather saddle displays a taped repair.

William Starley patented the 'Starley Axle' in 1892 (Patent No. 7752) — a live axle incorporating a differential gear and four in-line bearings. This design became standard for most tricycles and was later adopted in some motor cars.
