1928 Scott 596cc Flying Squirrel De Luxe

1928 Scott 596cc Flying Squirrel De Luxe
Registration no. YX 7719
Frame no. 2105M
Engine no. FY1218A

Scott rejigged their Flying Squirrel models for the 1929 model year. Instead of the single model offered for the previous two years, the refreshed range comprised three machines, each of which was offered with a choice of 498cc and 596cc engines. The new entry level model was the Touring version, top of the range was the TT Replica which was based on Tommy Hatch's third place machine in the 1928 Senior TT, and in between these two was the model offered here: the Flying Squirrel De Luxe, featuring Scott's own "kite" forks, an Enfield cush drive rear hub, and a rear carrier. This 1929 model was first registered on 5th September 1928.

It is believed to have been featured in the September 2002 issue of "Classic Bike" and is known to have had only four owners since 1949. A previous owner, from 1949, was Don "Lofty" Avis, a prominent club member. The bike features "Loftylube": his tried and tested oiling system which combined correct levels of lubrication with dramatically reduced levels of smoke from the exhaust. The Scott is currently a non-runner, the exact nature of the problem is presently unknown. The immediately previous owner, who owned it from 2005-2016, advises us that he had had the engine's bottom end overhauled by Scott supremo the late Ken Lack, and the magneto overhauled by magneto guru Tony Stairs. We note that the Scott is fitted with a very elegant period Jaeger speedometer. The above frame and engine numbers are also recorded in the accompanying 1947 continuation logbook indicating that this may possibly be a matching numbers machine. Also supplied are a V5C, old V5, multiple MOTs, and a detached aluminium side cover.
