Lot 541

1954 Panther 350cc Model 75

1954 Panther 350cc Model 75
Registration no. 554 XWB
Frame no. OP8350 (see text)
Engine no. 54K190B

Panther first used vertical power units in 1948 for its 250cc and 350cc trials models, which unlike the firm's traditional, large-capacity roadsters eschewed the stressed-member, sloping-engine layout in favour of a conventional tubular frame, an arrangement adopted by the equivalent roadsters in 1949. The handsome overhead-valve engine contained its dry-sump oil tank within the crankcase in Panther's traditional fashion, and was unusual in employing plain bush main bearings. A Dowty Oleomatic front fork was standard and the Models 65 (250) and 75 (350) retained a rigid frame. For 1953 there was a new swinging-arm frame and a conventional telescopic fork, and in this form the smaller Panthers lasted until the early 1960s, the company's representation in the lightweight category being exclusively Villiers-powered thereafter.

This Model 75 was first registered in Holland 1954 and comes with hand written notes (in Dutch) and a photocopy of the Panther Owners Club magazine. According to the accompanying HPI report, the Panther was first registered in the UK on 20th January 2024 and has belonged to the current keeper since 7th March 2024. No previous history is known. The machine also comes with a V5C Registration Certificate and is sold as seen (the engine turns over). It should be noted that the HPI/V5C record the frame number as 'F8350', a clerical error.
