Lot 531

1952 Norton 497cc Dominator Model 7

1952 Norton 497cc Dominator Model 7
Registration no. EO 9891
Frame no. G12 45428 (See text)
Engine no. 45428 G12 (See text)

In the aftermath of World War II, the larger British manufacturers were vying to catch up with Triumph, who had introduced a vertical twin cylinder machine before the war. BSA had begun in 1946 with the A7, but Norton were close on their heels with the Dominator Model 7 in late 1948 for the 1949 model year. Whilst the Norton may have been late to the party, it sprang forth fully-formed, with the innovation of rear suspension, in the form of plunger rear springing, an advantage which was not offered on BSA twins until the 1949 season; undoubtedly prompted by the forthcoming Dominator.

EO 9891 was purchased by the deceased owner in May 1981 from the Beamish North of England Open Air Museum (invoice on file). After some work and replacement parts, the owner was able to MoT the Norton the following year, and reference to the expired MoT certificates suggests that it was used thereafter on a regular basis for some years, albeit with only limited mileage. It has evidently not been used in recent years, and is therefore sold strictly as viewed, and will require recommissioning and safety checks prior to use by a new owner. It should be noted that the V5C incorrectly records both frame and engine numbers as 91245428. Examination of the VE60 shows that the correct 'G' of the numbers has been inadvertently interpreted as '9'. In addition, the model suffix of the engine number has been recorded as a prefix. Documentation comprises a current V5C, an old-type V5, an old-type V5C, a continuation VE60, a quantity of expired MoT certificates, the aforementioned sale invoice and a quantity of correspondence, invoices, and sundry papers. Also present are a photocopy manual and spares list, and 2 maintenance books.
