1984 Kawasaki GPZ900R A1

1984 Kawasaki GPZ900R A1
Registration no. A66 VDS
Frame no. ZX900A-002710
Engine no. ZX900AE003218

"When it appeared in 1984, the GPz900R moved the goalposts in the performance bike market. It was the first real 150mph bike and it was at the cutting edge of motorcycle development with four valves per cylinder, liquid cooling, rising-rate rear suspension, a 16" front wheel and anti-dive forks." - Bike magazine. Reviewing Kawasaki's increasingly collectible 'time machine' in its November 2002 issue, Britain's best-selling motorcycle magazine rated the GPz900R a decent sports tourer (even by modern-day standards) and a good budget buy with an excellent club spares back-up.

Made famous by its starring role in the 1986 blockbuster movie, Top Gun, in which Tom Cruise's character, Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell, rides one, the early Kawasaki GPZ900R is now highly sought after by collectors. In Top Gun, the GPZ900R appears in many memorable scenes, most famously on the runway where Maverick races an F-14 Tomcat fighter taking off, and in several others which have cemented the Kawasaki's place in the history of popular culture.

This particular example was acquired by the current owner on 5th October 2024 with the intention of undertaking a full restoration. However, with too many other ongoing projects, the owner has decided to part with the machine. The bike starts and runs with the aid of a jump-start battery (see short running video online) and is offered as a rolling restoration project. Its mechanical and riding condition are unknown, and it is therefore sold strictly as seen, for restoration (viewing highly recommended).

According to the accompanying HPI report, 'A66 VDS' was first registered on 21st May 1984 and has had 13 previous keepers. The gov.uk MoT history dates back to May 2006, when the odometer displayed 62,227 miles. The current reading is 65,210 miles, indicating fewer than 3,000 miles covered in the last 19 years. The machine also comes with a V5C Registration Certificate and two keys: one for the ignition and the second for the fuel filler cap.

A rare opportunity to acquire an early example of the legendary GPZ900R, an iconic model that links Kawasaki's engineering excellence with Hollywood legend.
