One of the most sensational motorcycles of recent times, the BMW R nineT was the undisputed star of the 2013 EICMA show in Milan. A retro-style roadster, the R nineT was an acknowledgement of the custom scene's growing influence, and was marketed by its maker as a 'blank canvas for customizing'. Demonstrating that BMW had judged the potential market perfectly, the initial production run was soon sold out.

"It's not a retro throwback," declared Bike magazine. "It's not a modern bike that's pretending to be a 1970s roadster like the Honda CB1100. It's not a Captain America chopper. And it's all the better for it.

"The R nineT is a high performance motorcycle stripped to the essentials, and it's therefore true to the spirit of the original café racers. It is not a lazy custom pastiche."

Technologically, the R nineT represented something of a throwback, using the 'old' air/oil-cooled boxer engine rather than the latest water-cooled version, while BMW's usual Telelever front suspension was replaced with an upside down (USD) telescopic front fork. And with 110bhp on tap and weighing a respectable 220kg, the R nineT was no slouch.

To facilitate easy customizing, the R nineT featured separate chassis and engine wiring harnesses; various alternative seat and rear subframe configurations; and three mounting points on the rear bevel housing for lighting or numberplate brackets. For those unwilling or unable to go down the 'DIY' route, BMW offered a seemingly limitless range of optional personalising accessories.

Not content to leave future developments to individual customisers, the factory followed up with the R nineT Pure roadster, the R nineT Urban GS, the R nineT Racer, the UK-only R nineT Sport, and the R nineT Scrambler. For the UK market there was the R nineT Racer S, which came with heated grips, wire-spoked wheels, chrome exhaust and LED indicators in addition to the model's already exceptional standard specification. List price of the Racer S version was £11,360.

This BMW R nineT Racer S was supplied new to the current vendor on 30th May 2017 by Wollaston Motors, the official BMW Motorrad dealer in Northampton. The machine is finished in Light White with matching trim, while factory-fitted and dealer-supplied options include Datatag marking and a BMW-branded Garmin Sat Nav and Sat Nav Kit (£698). The total on-the-road price was approximately £12,610 including VAT.

At time of cataloguing the BMW had covered only 1,641 miles from new. Kept as part of a private collection, it is only being sold due lack of use. Due to its low mileage the machine has not yet been serviced and will require thorough recommissioning and safety checks before returning to the road. Accompanying documentation consists of the original purchase invoice and a V5C Registration Certificate.
