"So the Adventure is comfy and utterly capable on motorways and in town, and that's crucial for everyday adventure riding... But it's also confidence inspiring, fun and fast on unseen bumpy B-roads and congested trunk routes..." - Bike magazine testing the BMW R1200GS Adventure TE in 2016.

When BMW introduced its all-new 'Boxer' twins in 1992, few people would have predicted that within a few years the enduro-style 'GS' version would be one of the most commonly sighted motorcycles on the roads of Britain and Europe. Indeed, it is the GS's spectacular success that has fuelled the vigorous growth of the 'Adventure' class as a whole; now every other major manufacturer has at least one such model in the catalogue. BMW cleverly ensured that the GS range was backed by a wide range of bespoke accessories, to which independent specialists have made their own sizeable contribution.

The BMW's popularity was given a further boost in 2004 when the television series 'Long Way Round' featured Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman riding a pair of heavily laden R1150GS Adventures around the world from London to New York via Europe and Asia, a trip of 19,000 miles.

Enlarged from 1,130 to 1,170cc in 2004 for the R1200GS, the boxer engine was also extensively redesigned to make it stronger, smoother, more powerful and lighter than before. Power went up from 89bhp to 98 horsepower and torque from 71lb/ft to almost 85, with further increases resulting from the adoption of four-valve cylinder heads for 2010.

There were more significant upgrades for 2013, principally the switch to an all-new partially water-cooled motor. Maximum power output was raised to 125bhp and torque to 92lb/ft, while the adoption of a ride-by-wire throttle enabled BMW to offer five riding modes plus traction control and cruise control. There was also an all-new trellis-type multi-tubular frame.

Purchased new by the current vendor, this is an example of the top-specification TE (Touring Edition) variant, featuring Dynamic ESA (semi-active suspension); Enduro ASC with Enduro ABS; and Rain, Road, Dynamic, Enduro and Enduro Pro riding modes. Other notable features include a BMW Motorrad Navigator IV sat-nav; LED headlight; Daytime Riding Light; twin-bar rear light; heated grips; tyre pressure control; LED white indicators; onboard Computer Pro Preparation for GPS; top box, side panniers and tank bag; and an Akrapovic exhaust (original included in sale). The total purchase price was £13,815.

First registered on 1st August 2013, the BMW was used for a single road trip and since then has been kept as part of a private collection. It is only being sold due to lack of use. Owing to its low mileage, the GS has not yet been serviced and will require thorough recommissioning and safety checks before returning to the road. It is understood that there are no outstanding recalls relating to this machine, although it may require a software update. There is also a note on the BMW system from 2022/23 stating 'Retro fitting rear of rear wheel swinging arm, drainage and checking cardan shaft'; however, this is not recorded as having been completed. As the BMW system notes an unconfirmed recall item, prospective purchasers are encouraged to confirm this motorcycle's recall status with BMW prior to bidding. Accompanying documentation consists of the 2013 purchase invoice and a V5C Registration Certificate.
