Lot 505

1981 Moto Guzzi 844cc Le Mans II

1981 Moto Guzzi 844cc Le Mans II
Registration no. TUR 699W
Frame no. VE *24188* (see text)
Engine no. VF *083903* (see text)

The first across-the-frame Guzzi shaft drive v-twin was the 700 V7 announced at the end of 1965. The capacity was increased to 750 for the V7 Sports, and eventually the factory enlarged the engine to 844cc for use on the racing machines, and ultimately it was incorporated into the Le Mans model for 1976. This sports model rapidly became a favourite with the public and its performance was on a par with other sports bikes of the day, such as Ducati and Laverda. In 1978 it was restyled, and furnished with stronger forks than the Mark I, when the Mark II was introduced, running until 1981.

TUR 699W, one of the last of the Mark IIs, was purchased by the vendor in 1986, and the machine now has a total mileage of 38,195 at the time of consignment. He has used the Guzzi every year since acquisition, albeit for limited mileage, and it remains in its original paint with the exception of modest amounts of touching-up in places. The paint scheme of black and gold was provided as a limited edition by Coburn and Hughes. The vendor removed the lower fairing sides, preferring the look of the machine without these, but they are included with the bike. He advises that a new owner should check the machine over to his own satisfaction, and carry out safety checks prior to use. The Le Mans started readily on consignment. The V5C records one extra keeper; this was the owner's wife, in whose name it was registered for some time, whilst remaining the property of the vendor. Please note that the V5C records the frame and engine serial numbers only, without the prefixes. Documentation comprises a current V5C, an old-type V5, and a quantity of expired MoT certificates.
