THE CENTAUR

The Centaur Portable Scooter is an ingenious solution to a problem no one realized they had. Conceived and constructed by the misleadingly named Connecticut Construction Corp. in Manchester, Connecticut, the Centaur is powered by a 2-cycle single cylinder Clinton air-cooled engine making 4.7 brake horsepower. It folds up into a 90-pound box that can be unfolded and on the road in two minutes.

Fitted with coil over shock absorber suspension front and rear, it has mechanical drum brakes on both wheels. With a load capacity of 400 pounds and top speed of 40 mph it can handle two people and the relatively supple suspension is adaptable to both road and rough terrain use. One of the uses highlighted by the fact sheet put out by National Scooters (the trade name adopted by the manufacturer, Connecticut Construction Corp.) was industrial/construction, perhaps explaining the original impetus for its design; it is ideal for carrying from site to site and then rapidly supervising construction.

THE SCOOTER OFFERED

This Centaur was donated to the National Automobile Museum by Dr. David E. Williams, an anesthesiologist in Reno who bought it new in 1965 and carried it in his Cessna 182 Skylane on vacation trips to Mexico. It was also used in Reno and was street licensed in Nevada until the mid-90's.

Original and unrestored, the Centaur has great possibilities not only as car show transportation but also as a wonderful, air-cooled accessory for a fully equipped VW Microbus or travel van.
