THE CAR OFFERED

This Meteor speed car was bought at an Huisman auction in Sacramento, California in 1982. Described there as a 1920 Meteor Gentleman's Speedster it consisted, at least according to the picture included in the auction brochure copy on file, of a long wheelbase chassis with artillery wheels, two seats, a bolster tank and a pair of rear deck mounted spare tires.

It was later included in a National Automobile Museum display, "Vintage Racers Fast & Furious" with this description:

"The Meteor's owner and son often dreamed of owning a 1920s vintage Indianapolis race car. During the1980s, the owner attended an auction in California. He was looking for farm equipment, not a race car. But something caught his eye. A red, consignment vehicle that may have at one time raced on northern California dirt or board tracks. He bought it and trailered it home.

"The owner and his son decided to build a custom designed Indy [style] race car from what was left of the racer. They used many of the original parts, including the chassis and Continental engine. The exposed barrel gas tank was eliminated and replaced and then covered by a streamlines 'ice cream cone' tail. A custom tailored cockpit was created around the son's tall frame."

It has been vintage raced including at the Monterey Historics and shown at the Pebble Beach Concours. It is lefthand drive layout, has two seats, a twine-wrapped steering wheel, contracting band rear drum brakes, modern historic racing safety equipment, disc wheels, 5.50-6.00-20 Dunlop tires. The engine breathes through two modern Rochester downdraft carburetors and gets its sparks from a Wico magneto.

It is a tidy and sound representation of a recurring speed car theme. It will go fast while the occupants sit up in the open-air wearing goggles and dusters making it seem like they're going even faster.

It is a thrilling and elemental drive.
