THE INTERNATIONAL MW TRUCKS

International trucks were produced by the commercial vehicles division of International Harvester, a company created in 1902 by the merger of a group of agricultural equipment manufacturers. International Harvester is best known for its immensely successful 'Farmall' tractors, production of which commenced in 1924, though before then the company had diversified into the production of light commercial vehicles and trucks. The first of these was the high-wheeled, pickup-like Model A Auto Wagon of 1907, which was powered by an air-cooled 'flat twin' engine of 15hp. 1912 was the first year for the water cooled Flat-twin engine that would produce a staggering 20HP. Production grew exponentially, rising from 73 units in 1907 to a staggering 2,465 by 1909. In 1916 an International became the first truck to scale the formidable Pikes Peak in Colorado.

Quite obviously these trucks define the term "Horseless Carriage". With their 38" tall wheels designed, much like a wagon, to navigate deeply rutted and rough roads. The two speed planetary drive transmission to dual chain outputs transmit the traction to the road surfaces. Advertised with a price tag of $950 and with a maximum payload of 1000lbs these trucks would often lead hard lives. Few are thought to survive today.

THE TRUCK OFFERED

This particular 1912 MW has been a long-time resident of the Harrah and then the National Automobile Museum. On file is a corrections sheet dated from April 19th, 1967, listing the truck in the museum as early as then. It was noted as a "Red Star" denoting the truck had been purchased by the organization restored, with period photos to affirm this. It was then part of the vehicles that were then purchased by Holiday Inn and later donated to the formation of the National Automobile Museum. On file is also one of the postcards that Harrah's produced that shows a lovely ¾ view of the truck in the same livery it continues to wear today. Having been on static display likely several decades in the Museums care this truck will require a through but straightforward recommissioning.
