THE FORD MODEL T

The image of the 1928 Ford Model A was seen on the outside of Fords in 1926. The hood and cowl merged smoothly, fenders were rounded over the wheels, artillery wheels were standard, but wire wheels were a common option.

While Runabouts and Roadsters had served for many years as multi-purpose vehicles for farmers, mechanics and merchants, the pull of the utilitarian pickup truck was undeniable and had become increasingly important. Henry Ford was no stranger to seeking to satisfy unfilled niches in Ford's model lineup and a dedicated factory-built pickup appeared in 1925, finding its most evolved form in 1926 as Ford moved, reluctantly, to the drastically updated Model A. 76,000 were built in 1925, and only 28,000 in 1926 of these runout Model Ts.

Walk up to this 1926 Model T Roadster Pickup and at 40 feet it is likely to be discerned as a Model A. That is an easy mistake, enabled by Ford's use of Model T roadster pickup bodies on the new Model A's chassis, a triumph of model transition (typical of Ford) using up old elements combined with new.

It really takes looking at the engine or the pedal arrangement to realize this is a T engine with a three pedal planetary gearbox in a Model A body, or vice versa.

THE CAR OFFERED

This Model T Roadster Pickup has red wire wheels, 4.40/4.50-21 tires, a single side mount spare, running board luggage fence, wood bedside board extensions, a top-opening windshield, manual windshield wiper and rear-view mirror. Modern parking and brake lights have been added along with a 12-volt electrical system, coil and distributor ignition and an alternator.

It is finished in black with black leatherette upholstery and a black leatherette top. The paint is chipped and scratched although the upholstery and top are serviceable. It has been on display for many years, and while drained of coolant and fuel, it will require recommissioning.

Practical and serviceable, it will be a wonderful vehicle for parades, events and weekend trips to the local hardware store or lumberyard where it will stand out in the parking lot. Or perhaps a hardware store owner or carpenter could buy it for promotion and a dramatic statement.
