THE INTERNATIONAL MODEL F

It's 1960 and you're reading Competition Press & Autoweek for the latest racing news. There's a side note about an unknown engineering innovator who's building a new 2.7 liter four-cylinder engine challenging conventional wisdom. It's an inline four-cylinder with a chain-driven single overhead camshaft, inclined overhead valves, hemispherical combustion chambers and roller cam followers. It is light weight because it is air cooled and has none of the liquid cooling complication and weight: No radiator, no fussy coolant liquid. The cylinder dimensions are square, equal 3¾ inches bore and stroke. You think, "intriguing".

It's not. It was built in 1910-1911 by the International Harvester Company of Chicago, better known for combines, binders, Titan and Mogul tractors and its high-wheeler buggies with 2-cylinder opposed engines. "The Charlatans" hadn't yet built the 1914 Lyon Grand Prix ohc Peugeots.

The high wheelers that IHC built in great numbers to appeal to their loyal customers in America's vast reaches of farmland were every bit a gas-powered buggy. The Model F Runabout with its ohc four was low to the ground and every bit the equal in appearance and style with its sporting contemporaries. This was no high wheeler; it was a real roadster.

THE CAR OFFERED

Some cars age well and this 1910 International Model F Runabout is one of them. Not that it is miraculously preserved in barn find condition. It was restored long ago and shows its age on every surface and finish.

It doesn't matter. It is a wonderful, anachronistic, artifact of an engineer's vision in 1910, a glimpse into a future that would take over a generation to be realized in any meaningful degree.

Specifics: Righthand drive, wheel steering, a single rear seat, wood spoke wheels with 30x3½ tires, Jones speedometer, Atwood-Castle electrified kerosene sidelights, Rushmore acetylene headlight with a Rushmore generator, 2-speed sliding gear selective transmission, contracting band transmission brake, rear wheel expanding shoe drum brakes. There is no windshield or top ... goggles are not optional.

The old paint is generously cracked and chipped. The upholstery is old, stiff and wrinkled with a torn seam on the front seat. The engine and chassis are dusty from long static display. The left headlight lens is cracked.

And yet, it begs for a sympathetic redo, recommissioning and resuscitation. Update the cosmetics? Perhaps, but its intrigue, its value, its lessons lie under its hood with that prescient sohc hemi-head engine. Make it run and drive.

"It's a Hemi".
