THE WINTON MODEL 40

In the early years of the 20th century Wintons, despite their success, were 1- and 2-cylinder motor carriages and tourers. Sturdy and dependable, they proved to be capable of some remarkable feats including Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson's epic 63 day crossing from San Francisco to New York in 1903 ... to win a $50 bet.

The first four-cylinder Wintons were built in 1904. From 1905 on Wintons were offered in in 20-, 30- and 50-horsepower versions and thereafter Winton never built a car of less than 30 horsepower. In 1908 Winton went to six-cylinder engines with a peak of 85 horsepower in 1920, a prodigious monster with the power and torque to give even heavy formal cars startling performance.

Model 40 is best seen as a designation as the Winton version had 3¾ inch bore and 5¼ stroke and rated on the NACC formula just 33.75 horsepower. The long stroke lent the engine substantial torque while the smoothness of six cylinders suited the expectations of Winton's wealthy clients. Winton's business, though, was hit hard by the post-WWI recession. In 1922 a Winton Touring car had a factory price of $4,600 and the sedan was $6,200. Production dwindled to a reported 690 in 1922 but Winton's other business, making industrial and marine 2-cycle diesel engines was healthy and would go on to become the core of General Motors' Electro-Motive Division's diesel engine business.

THE CAR OFFERED

This Winton Model 40 Touring is in very good older restored condition with sound older paint and a tight-fitting but soiled top. It is finished in green with green fenders, black upholstery and a natural cloth top. The engine number is 2486, a number consistent with other known 1922 Model 40s.

It is generously equipped with dark green disc wheels, 35x5 tires, wind wings, Moto Meter, luggage trunk, manual windshield wiper, Warner speedometer and a green tinted glass windshield visor. It comes with copies of the owner's, service and parts manuals. Displayed for many years at the Minden Automotive Museum it has been carefully protected from the elements, preserved and stored. It is an ideal candidate for recommissioning and introducing new generations of onlookers to the importance and quality of Winton automobiles.
