THE SHERIDAN

Sheridan was a product developed by D.A. Burke to fit a price and size gap between Chevrolet and Oakland/Pontiac. He promoted it to W.C. "Billy" Durant at General Motors and Billy quickly signed up, making Sheridan a subsidiary of GM. Production was in Muncie, Indiana in the former Inter-State factory. Two engines were planned, both built by GM subsidiary Northway, a 35 horsepower four cylinder and an 80 horsepower eight cylinder (likely a derivative of the 70 horsepower V-8 used in the Cole.)

The 224.3 cubic inches, 35 horsepower overhead valve four powered Sheridan began production in August 1920. Within the year, though, W.C. Durant left GM and Sheridan production ended in July 1921. The plant was then sold to W.C. Durant, where Durant and Princeton cars would go on to be built.

The eight-cylinder Sheridan never made it beyond the prototype stage, but the history of the marque and its ownership mark an important milestone in the larger history of General Motors.

THE CAR OFFERED

This 1921 Sheridan B-41 Touring was acquired in 1961 by an entity known at the time ironically as "Harrah's Garage" from Robert Bergstadt in Rockford, Illinois. Harrah's paid a considerable sum of $550 for it, F.O.B. Rockford implying it must have been in pretty good condition at the time, an inference bolstered by a 1964 Research Department memo noting it to be in original condition and calling out no items for rectification.

Today it is in good and complete overall condition, finished in blue with black fenders, brown leatherette upholstery and a black leatherette top. It is currently identified by its engine number, but there is serial number #1730, stamped on the right rear chassis frame.

Equipment included Osgood Lens electric headlights by Auto-Lite, a single rear-mounted spare, passengers' footrest in the rear compartment, Stewart drum speedometer, folding windshield, manually operated windshield wiper and a Klaxon electric horn. There is a Harrah's sticker on the windshield noting its last driven date as March 6, 1975. Cosmetically it is in sound overall condition with an orderly engine compartment and is complete with its engine compartment drip pan, which is demonstrably serving its original purpose. It is believed to have been stored dry, without coolant or fuel.

With its 35-horsepower overhead valve engine and good complement of equipment, this Sheridan promises to be a superior ride when recommissioned.
