THE LIPPARD-STEWART TRUCKS

Started in Buffalo, New York in 1911 by T.R. Lippard and R.G. Stewart, Lippard-Stewart was known for its light delivery trucks. Like many other manufacturers at the time, it combined a proprietary frame with bought-in components. In Lippard-Stewart's case that meant 30hp Continental side valve engines and Brown-Lipe 3-speed gearboxes. The chosen Continental was an exceptionally long stroke engine with 5¼ inch stroke and only 3¾ inch bore. The undersquare architecture gave this engine exceptional low rpm torque, perfect for trucks.

Semi-elliptical leaf springs were used at all four corners. The rear axle had coil helper springs for heavy loads. Service brakes were contracting bands on drums on the rear wheels. Expanding shoes on the same drums served as emergency brakes.

Two body styles predominated, a panel delivery and a canopy express, although several other bodies were offered including police patrol, bus and ambulance bodies and an undertaker's casket wagon. All Lippard-Stewarts used Renault pattern radiator placement behind the engine and in front of the firewall. The coal scuttle hood was distinctive and aristocratic at a time when Renaults were highly regarded among the wealthy.

The company remained in business until only 1919 after the original partners left in 1912 and started a new company, the Stewart Motor Corporation.

THE TRUCK OFFERED

This 1912 Lippard-Stewart Model E Express truck is an older but very handsome restoration in Merrimac Green with Road Cart Red running gear and black fenders. The paintwork is proudly embellished with imaginative pinstriping that would have made Von Dutch proud. The upholstery is black leatherette, and the roof is covered with black composite material. The driver and assistant seats are protected by a Sterling Auto Accessories folding windshield.

Two kerosene sidelights are placed on the posts behind the seats and there is a kerosene taillight similarly placed on the left rear roof post. It rides on 34x4 tires mounted on red wood spoke wheels and has a Stewart speedometer and Rube's bulb horn.

The exact restoration date is not known although the undated Harrah's Automobile Collection Preliminary Inspection states it was restored at the time of acquisition. Today it remains well kept in older restored condition and although it has not been driven in many years its condition and preservation are such that recommissioning should be straightforward.

Lippard-Stewart's marketing materials state, "Prompter and more frequent deliveries will increase a merchant's patronage. This is due to the greater satisfaction afforded customers." That is copy that could have been written by Jeff Bezos eighty years later. Some things never change, just the technology used to implement them.
