THE WHITE MOTOR COMPANY

White automobiles grew out of the White Sewing Machine Company. White's first cars were highly regarded steamers that established several milestones as the first automobile driven by a U.S. president (Theodore Roosevelt in 1906), part of the first White House garage (Taft in 1909) and held the mile record of 73.75mph in 1905.

White's steamers were built to high standards and commanded strong prices – it was $4,000 for the least expensive White Model O-O in 1911. The White brothers saw the coming of the gasoline engine, however, and built their last steam car in 1911. The White truck business, however, would soon take precedence. The last White cars were built in 1918; White trucks, through a series of mergers and acquisitions, continued to be built until 1996.

The G-A was White's first series of gasoline powered automobiles. Introduced in 1910 the G-A had a 226.4 cubic inch L-head inline four-cylinder engine and was rated 20/30hp, 20 horsepower for its ALAM calculated output and approximately 30 brake horsepower. Unlike many competitors the G-A had a standard 4-speed transmission but a conventional leaf spring live axle suspension and rear wheel brakes.

It was soundly constructed with a robust price tag of $2,000 to match.

THE CAR OFFERED

This 1910 White G-A Touring is an outstanding example of the first year of White's gasoline car construction and it takes only a quick look under the hood to see how the White designers lavished attention upon a clean, orderly design with the spark plugs and valve access caps concealed under a vanity cover. Built on a 110-inch wheelbase (the White G-B had ten more inches, adding $500 to the price) it displays White's signature design elements and the quality materials and methods used in its construction.

It is righthand drive, and is generously equipped with Solar acetylene headlights, kerosene sidelights, a single right-side spare, bulb horn, acetylene generator, updraft carburetor, and a clock and Jones speedometer. The livery is an eggplant hued deep red with black fenders and body accents, black leather upholstery and a black cloth top behind a Champion windshield. It rides on body color wood spoke wheels shod with 32x4 Firestone "Non-Skid" tires and bears a Selden Patent plate numbered 156944.

This is a very good older restoration, most likely from Harrah's shop, that displays well with some age-related deterioration in the paint and chassis. It shows some tour and demonstration miles. It as an excellent example of White's quality, even in the first year of its gasoline car production and still exudes that same quality today. {Reportedly the engine was gone through by the staff at the NAM in recent memory, likely setting the stage for a straight forward recommissioning.}
