THE CAR OFFERED

The original Lincolns were designed by Detroit's "Master of Precision", Henry M. Leland, after terminated his relationship with the Billy Durant run Cadillac when Durant refused to divert Cadillac production to build Liberty aircraft engines during the First World War. Leland then started Lincoln to build Liberty engines, got a massive contract from the War Department ... that was soon canceled when the war ended. Faced with massive debts, a large factory and thousands of workers Leland, then 77 years old, decided to build cars. He called them Lincoln, named after the first person he had voted for in a presidential election.

The venture didn't go well and in 1921 the company was placed in receivership. Henry Ford paid $8 million for the privilege but what he got was a superbly engineered, but unattractively designed, automobile with a sophisticated 60° V-8 engine using "fork and blade" connecting rod big end bearings that meant the cylinders on opposite banks did not need to be offset and full pressure lubrication. The original Lincoln Model L V-8 would continue to power Lincolns through 1932.

The body designs were another problem, but Henry Ford resolved it by giving his son Edsel, whose sense of style and design matched his father's disdain for it, the leadership role in finding independent coachbuilders and selecting their most appealing designs that reflected the aesthetics and forward-looking inclinations of the time.

As mentioned, 1932 was the last year for the Leland-designed "fork and blade" 60° V-8, now with 385 cubic inches and producing a smooth and lazy 125 horsepower. Its four-door sedan coachwork was constructed by Murray based on designs by Dietrich, Inc. The sits low on its frame with live axle leaf spring suspension and mechanical servo-assisted four-wheel drum brakes.

It is a high-quality car, fully equipped and luxuriously appointed with details like a Ha-Dees heater, pulldown quarter and rear window shades, rear compartment smokers' kits, translucent windshield visors, ivory wire wheels, hubcaps, wide whitewall tires, dual side mounts with cloth covers, Depress Beam headlights and a luggage rack. Finished in ivory with a brown roof, body accent and fenders, it is upholstered in brown cloth with ivory cloth trim.

But it's truly important attribute is its final year Henry Leland "fork and blade" 60° V-8, one of the most remarkable achievements of early 20th century American automobile manufacturing and a fitting memorial to the "Master of Precision" who led two of the greatest American luxury marques, Cadillac and Lincoln, and who died in the year this final Lincoln Model KA was built.
