THE PONTIAC SERIES 6-27

When General Motors president Alfred P. Sloan unveiled his vision for a "six-cylinder Chevrolet," the result was one of the most consequential debuts in American automotive history. With the tagline "Chief of the Sixes," the new Pontiac was deliberately positioned to bridge the gap between Chevrolet's four-cylinder economy cars and the more expensive offerings of Oakland, Oldsmobile, and Buick. When the Pontiac made its public debut at the New York Auto Show on January 3, 1926, production was already underway at GM's Oakland plant in Pontiac, Michigan — manufacture having commenced on December 28, 1925, with the new straight-six engine designed by Henry M. Crane. The Series 6-27 was offered in two body styles at launch — a coupe and a five-passenger two-door coach — both priced at $825. The coach body, constructed by Fisher Body, featured double beading, plate glass windows, triple-step front fenders, drum-style headlamps, a honeycomb radiator with Indian head mascot, and a Fisher VV windshield. Power came from the distinctive split-head L-head inline six of 186.5 cubic inches, developing 40 horsepower at 2,400 rpm — smooth, refined, and notably free of vibration by the standards of the era. Pontiac produced approximately 39,000 vehicles within six months of its Auto Show introduction and sold 76,742 within twelve months, making it the top-selling six-cylinder vehicle in the United States that year. The Series 6-27 is a rare and historically significant Pontiac, representing the marque's founding moment — and surviving first-year examples are exceedingly scarce.

THE CAR OFFERED

Acquired in 1965 by Harrah for $385, chassis 93227 is finished in attractive Arizona Gray paint work over gray seats. It presents as a tidy car, likely restored in the 1960s with a previous owner. The odometer is currently showing 56,545 miles. The wood trim appears to be in well preserved condition with the wheel pinstriping still bright and tidy. The 3 liter straight six is cleanly finished. It has not been on the road in many decades. This first year Pontiac offers a straightforward opportunity to enjoy a classic 6-cylinder icon.
