THE CAR OFFERED

For a car that seemed to be static for much of its long and involved life, Ford actually changed the Model T almost continuously in search of lower costs, higher reliability and more practicality. In store were even more changes for the 1911-1912 models. The engine was redesigned, yet retained the same displacement and horsepower rating. Both axles were redesigned. Even the body, although still arrayed in brass, reflected changes, particularly in the front fenders.

Ford built only about 35,000 cars in 1911, but that was 83% more than in 1910.

This Open Runabout has 30x3 tires on the standard wood spoke wheels. While many Runabouts had a cylindrical fuel tank behind the seat, this one has an extended deck with an occasional seat above a toolbox. Equipment includes Brown Model 5 carbide headlights, a carbide gas generator, E&J kerosene sidelights and taillight, bulb horn, rear view mirror, folding windshield and the then ubiquitous brass radiator.

It is equipped with a black leatherette top, black leather upholstery and is finished in black, an unusual color choice for 1911 when most Model Ts were finished in Washington Blue with black fenders. Red and green also seem to have been available.

According to a note in the file, this Model T was restored in 1959 by Max Toby, and it remains in presentable and complete condition although the engine and chassis will benefit from attention. Likewise, the horn needs a new bulb. The brass is in good condition but needs several bottles of Brasso.

A classic Model T from an important transitional year, this will be a fascinating conversation piece and a fun tour vehicle, especially for the person perched on the "mother-in-law seat".
