THE MERCURY COMET

Mercury's Comet began life as an orphaned Edsel project, rescued in late 1959 and redirected to Lincoln-Mercury dealers as a stand-alone "Comet" for 1960 and 1961. Built atop a stretched Ford Falcon platform with upgraded trim, the Comet proved an instant success and was formally absorbed into the Mercury line for 1962. That same year saw the model's first significant styling revision — the Comet script migrated from the rear fenders to the front, round tail lamps replaced the earlier fin-mounted units, and a fine vertical-bar grille gave the car a cleaner face.

The sporting-trim S-22 had been introduced in the spring of 1961 as Mercury's answer to the Corvair Monza, with bucket seats, a center console, full wheel covers, narrow whitewalls, special badging, and a medallion set above the roof trim. For 1962 the S-22 received six bullet-shaped taillamps in place of the previous four and was available with the larger 170-cubic-inch Thriftpower six producing 101 horsepower, paired with either a three-speed manual or the Merc-O-Matic automatic. Roughly 95 percent of 1962 Mercurys left the factory with automatic transmissions, and S-22 production represented only a small fraction of the 165,225 Comets built that year.

THE CAR OFFERED

Presented in red with a white roof over red leatherette, this S-22 is an unrestored original graded condition 3. It retains its Merc-O-Matic automatic, bucket seats and console, under-dash air conditioning, full wheel covers, and narrow whitewalls — very much as a buyer would have specified it new.

The paint, chrome, and interior show their age consistent with an honest survivor that has never been taken apart. It is a sound original Comet of a sort that grows harder to find each year, and one that should respond well to straightforward mechanical sorting and gentle cosmetic attention. For a collector drawn to early-'60s compact Americana on a practical budget, it represents a rare and inexpensive entry point.
