THE ESSEX SUPER SIX

The smaller Essex turned into a substantial sales success for its parent, Hudson, particularly after its F-head 180 cubic inch four was replaced in 1924 by a new, smaller 144 cubic inch L-head six making an estimated 40 horsepower (Essex kept the brake horsepower to itself, but at least 40 brake horsepower was the general estimate.) Although no more powerful than the four, the Six drove more smoothly and was consistent with Essex's established quality and reliability. Styling also was updated and in 1927 Essex added one of the prettiest boattail Speedabout 2-seat bodies of the era to its catalog offering. It attracted plenty of attention to the Essex model that year, helping it achieve shipments of 210,380 units during calendar 1927.

THE CAR OFFERED

This 1927 Essex Super Six Speedabout is a recently acquired addition to the National Automobile Museum. It has varnished wood spoke wheels, whitewall tires, a rear-mounted spare, wood steering wheel, Steward drum speedometer, Moto Meter and an opening windshield.

It has been cosmetically maintained with an older repaint in green with black fenders, black leather upholstery and a beige cloth top. The top fits tightly but the instrument panel is dull. The chassis and engine compartment are dirty and neglected but original.

It is a project, but a worthwhile one and a sound and complete place to start. When completed, whether to driving standards or as a concours restored showpiece, it will be a handsome, distinctive and rare car that will bring compliments, positive attention and a satisfying driving experience.
