The David Plant Collection, 1987 BMW 987cc K100 RS

The David Plant Collection
1987 BMW 987cc K100 RS
Registration no. K101 MAN (Isle of Man)
Frame no. 144648
Engine no. 17872105

An all-new design that was supposed to replace BMW's traditional flat-twins, the K100 arrived for 1984 restating the virtues of solidity, comfort and exemplary build quality long associated with the marque. An 8-valve twin-cam unit displacing 998cc, the brick-like four-cylinder motor was laid on its side, lowering the centre of gravity, and mounted fore-and-aft to facilitate the retention of BMW's characteristic shaft drive. Bosch electronic fuel injection was employed and the long-stroke four developed its maximum output of 90bhp at a relatively low 8,000rpm. The K100 spawned a 750cc three-cylinder variant (the K75) and in 1992 was enlarged to 1,092cc, having gained a 16-valve cylinder head along the way. Model designations were carried over from the large-capacity twins: the K100RS being the top-of-the line sports roadster and the K100RT the tourer. Although somewhat down on power compared with Japanese opposition, the K100RS nevertheless had a top speed of around 120mph while cosseting its rider with superior comfort and better wind protection.

Finished in a beautiful shade of green, this K100RS currently displays a total of 26,185 miles on the odometer and was last taxed (in the Isle of Man) until 30th April 2017 (it should be noted that the HPI records it as originally black). The old IoM registration document records the previous UK registration as 'E52 KUW' (still recorded on the HPI but marked as being exported in 1994, which coincides with it being registered in the IoM). The machine is offered with a current IoM registration document and a copy of the rider's handbook (NB: the details recorded appear to relate to another machine that was registered in 1986; this example was first registered in 1987). Frame and engine numbers match the HPI. The engine turns over. Offered with panniers.

Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
